A measured used-car purchase

A viewing after rain can hide useful clues

Wet paint and poor light change what you can see. A viewing in those conditions may still be useful, but it should not be treated as complete. Record the limitations instead of filling them with confidence.

Name the conditions

Note whether the bodywork is wet, dirty or in shade. These are observations about the viewing, not allegations about the seller.

They help explain why another look may be necessary.

Ask for a suitable place

Where practical, arrange a daylight viewing with enough space to walk around safely. Do not inspect beside moving traffic.

A cramped position can prevent an ordinary look at panels and tyres.

Avoid risky access

Do not crawl beneath an unsupported vehicle or use improvised lifting arrangements. Underbody inspection belongs in a suitable professional setting.

Being thorough does not mean taking unnecessary physical risks.

Observe without diagnosing

Differences in finish, gaps or wear are reasons to ask questions. They do not establish a repair history by themselves.

A qualified inspector can investigate concerns that appearance alone cannot settle.

Look at the cabin

Check that the equipment you expect is present and ask to see normal functions demonstrated. Notice dampness or unusual smells without inventing a cause.

Record the location and let an appropriate professional assess it.

Request another look

If conditions prevented a proper viewing, ask to return before making a commitment. The answer itself helps you decide how to proceed.

You do not owe a purchase because the first visit took time.

Keep the limitation visible

Write down what was not inspected and why. A short note prevents uncertainty from disappearing in later conversation.

An attractive price should not turn an incomplete viewing into an assumed clean bill of health.

Where to check current information

Commercial conditions, requirements and road status can change. General planning guidance is not a live confirmation. Official links are places to continue checking, not evidence of a partnership or sponsorship.
